Dumping Syndrome After Gastric Bypass

Dumping syndrome is caused by certain foods leaving the stomach and entering the small intestine too quickly. It can occur after any operation that changes the way food is routed during digestion. The normal stomach has a valve called the pylorus, which regulates the amount and speed with which food passes into the small intestine. Gastric bypass reroutes food around the pylorus, so food passes directly through the gastric pouch to the small intestine without any hindrance.

Certain foods, such as sugars, high-fat foods, and simple carbohydrates, absorb water and tend to produce symptoms that may include light-headedness, cold sweats, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The light-headedness and sweats are related to low blood sugar, similar to those that occur during an insulin reaction.

In addition to not eating sugars and dense fats, dumping can be avoided by eating six small meals per day, choosing foods high in protein content, drinking between meals instead of during meals, eating slowly, and resting a bit before getting up after eating. Our research has shown that most people find that sweets taste sweeter after gastric bypass surgery, so much so that many prefer to avoid sweets altogether. This decreases their chances of experiencing the dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome does not occur after gastroplasty.
